<image:title>Captain Snuffy Sneaks Away - Captain Snuffy Sneaks AwaY</image:title>
<image:caption>Urban Glass, Brooklyn, NY, 2018 Enter the madcap tangle of a stowaway’s secret lab and living space tucked into the bowels of the last intergalactic cruiser to lave planet earth sometime in the near future. Witness a desperate amateur attempt to maintain biodiversity in the face of inhospitable space. This show is at once a celebration of the cross-species commonality of carnality and a confused chuckle at the self-destructive animal that we have become. It uses the tools of today to concentrate the eyeballs of tomorrow on the issues of forever. Meant to amuse and confuse, the very carefully constructed chaos quickly becomes a conceptual scavenger hunt for the curious and a light-hearted romp for the oblivious. Either way the seeds are sown. . .</image:caption>

<image:caption>WPA Gallery, Norfolk, VA, 2018 Center for Book Arts, New York, NY, 2018 Installation artist Ben Wright has opened a door in the back of his cerebral wardrobe and cordially invites you to step through and romp around in the inner workings of his unusual brain. Audiences engage in a four-dimensional scavenger hunt for meaning as they navigate the sights, sounds and sensations of a chaotic cave filled with light, love and brave humor about the human condition.</image:caption>

<image:title>Invasive Species - Curated by Dominika Drozdowska, Marzena Krzemińska-Baluch, Joanna Stembalska</image:title>
<image:caption>SIC! BWA Wrocław Gallery invites you to the exhibition summing up the artistic residency of the American artist Ben Wright, who uses the grotesque and irony to raise important issues of the relationship between humans and the world. Although the Polish version of title of the latest exhibition at the SIC! Gallery, Invasive Species, takes plural form, perhaps it would be the more accurate to put it in singular. After all, the most expansive creature that poses the greatest threat to the environment is human being. Today, humans and their "breeding and accompanying stock" account for 96% of the mammal population. We domesticate and subordinate a significant part of life on Earth to our own needs, which are often not a real necessity of our existence, but a manifestation of our whims and recklessness. One example of this can be the inconspicuous rabbit, which was brought to Australia in 1895 only for entertainment (hunting), and consequently caused a significant ecological disaster: the fast growth of its population resulted in the destruction of local vegetation, and thus in the erosion of soil. It took more than 100 years for Australia to cope with this disaster – in 1996 the problem of the plague was solved, but we do not know to what extent the ecosystem has been restored. The territorial expansiveness of humans resembles that of rabbits. Their mobility and rapid economic development have turned them into an invasive species, killing biodiversity and disturbing the harmonious distribution of beings. Don't be fooled, however – say the exhibition curators Dominika Drozdowska, Marzena Krzemińska-Baluch and Joanna Stembalska. It is not only us humans who are an invasive species. Our companion pet, a cat, is one as well. Besides, you will see for yourself how Ben Wright addresses these issues. In September, the American artist and biologist undertook a residency organised as part of the collaboration between BWA Wrocław and the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, and now he has created an exhibition at the SIC! BWA Wrocław Gallery. However, the mere consideration and defining human being as an "invasive species" is not enough for him. What more can an artist do besides transforming the distorted image of the contemporary world into their own artistic statement? – ask the exhibition curators. They may strive for synthesis, but they cannot do without the grotesque or at least a shadow of irony. This is what constitutes the creative power of Ben Wright and his aesthetic eclecticism . The exhibition will give us an opportunity to take a closer look at Ben Wright's format of work called Vivisection. It is an overloaded site specific installation, composed of various media: glass, paper collages, photographs, videos, objects and sculptures. I think artists often portray their ideas as finished, polished objects – says Ben Wright. I'm much more interested in the halfway point, where you present an idea to the audience or present something that triggers ideas.</image:caption>

      <image:title>High Noon</image:title>
<image:caption>When consuming the work of the De La Torre Brothers one is well served to ponder the unusual fraternal wellspring from which this richly dripping trans-cultural aesthetic and sharp societal critique flows. Two distinct yet symbiotic brains speak in the overlapping visual languages of a mashed up cultural construction. Like a co-joined fascination at the freak show, their four hands pass ideas and materials lovingly and mercilessly back and forth to amplify the excess until it vibrates just right. When the collaboration is complete, it is irrelevant where one brother’s influence ends and the other’s inspiration begins. The pervasive themes of duality, tragic humor, double image and contradiction present a conversation interrupted that defies our desire for simple conclusions. In 1998, the brothers produced a show at UrbanGlass titled 11:58 PMAD that presented a dystopian view of the approaching turn of the century. In a country under the incompetent rule of a benevolently evil W and gripped by the irrational fear of a flipping decimal few could imagine a future more dire. The brothers could and did. With their usual fatalistic humor, they kept us laughing to satisfy our need to cry. Now twenty years into the 21st century “High Noon” displays the prescience of that dark vision. We now find ourselves floundering in the “pastopian” responsibility of an Anthropocene reality where we clumsily juggle the fate of our planet with every lurch towards global meltdown. We look to our mad amoral berserker in chief, glowing bright orange atop his glistening pile of big macs, and miraculously summon nostalgia for the bumbling of our simpler past. Through the optical magic of luscious lenticular images and super saturated three-dimensional wallpaper the artists have invited our modern-day Boschian beasts to romp around in a hyper-sensory garden of earthly delights. Our wits are subjected to a state of psychedelic overload that draws us deeply into endless layers of excess and macabre opulence. The archeological layering of ubiquitous digital emoji over an ancient mandala made of disposable dollar store bling serves to remind us of the timeless nature of these struggles. By straddling borders and cultures and borrowing freely from the languages and symbols they encounter on their endless global travels the brothers are able to vacillate between critical outsiders and enthusiastic appropriators. The resulting mashup is both utterly specific to time and place and universally approachable and digestible. The carefully bilitterate text that the artists offer up in titles and embedded in the work are Easter eggs planted in plain sight to assist in the unpacking of these visually and conceptually dense offerings. The brothers are cunning linguists and never miss an opportunity for word play, often combining dialects to create double entendre and inject a kick in the gut sense of humor to the dialog. As tireless educators and prodigious and highly visibly creators, Einar and Jamex have long flown the flag for the freak contingent of the glass community. Through direct mentorship and as reluctant role models the brothers have influenced a generation of artists to abandon the precious and stale stereotypes of how and for what glass should be used. By breaking free of these tropes, they have lead the way towards a weirder, more wondrous future for the field. With “High Noon”, the two-headed de la serpent gnaws at the Achilles heel of a dying culture yet feeds to us the beautiful crinkly skins of our serpentine rebirth. The message is clear: something is definitely rotten in the state of our state. Awash in their hyper reality we are presented with the distinct possibility that it may have to all burn to the ground on our path to reincarnation. Though cynically pessimistic about our current state of affairs, there still lingers the slightest whiff of ironic hope that our salvation may still rest amidst our rush to self-destruction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Symbiotic Spheres - Curatorial Statement on The Interlocking Worlds of Glass, Science, and Art</image:title>
<image:caption>The 28 diverse artists represented in this show draw inspiration from across a wide spectrum of scientific inquiry. They express their ideas through the glass objects, mixed-media sculptures, and site-specific installations strategically placed throughout the museum. From the exquisite precision of scientific glass apparatus to the light bending optics of color, the artists employ glass in a variety of manners to take advantage of the material’s unique properties. Like catalysts of curiosity, the suggested narratives and scientific principles embedded in the artworks are prisms through which to rediscover the wonder and fun of the glass treasures and mysterious objects that fill this museum. Explore. Question. Learn. Smile.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pushing Buttons - John Roach</image:title>
<image:caption>John Roach is an interdisciplinary artist from Queens New York whose work exploits fissures between materials, objects, and our everyday experiences. Of particular interest is human perception and how it filters our experience of the world, he explores this through a variety of forms including installation, sound art, collaborative performances, sculpture, and participatory experiences. Many of his works are collaborative including Symbiotext a current project with the evolutionary biologist John Burns that brings together the genome of a salamander and green algae to control a text-based sound installation; Frozen Words Hot Air, a performance for two glass blowers, three musicians and a fusion of Donald Trump and François Rabelais at Urban Glass, Brooklyn; Gene Splicing for two percussionists, two glass blowers and DNA data for the 9e2 Festival of Art and Technology in Seattle, WA; and Stone Cold Groove in which he worked with local historians as well as a group of children to explore the historical and sonic resonances of the local marble quarries in Dorset Vermont. John received a BA in English from Rutgers University and an MFA in painting from Hunter College. He is a full time Faculty at Parsons School of Design where he teaches a wide range of courses that address the aesthetic, spatial, emotional, psychological, and political impact of sound.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pushing Buttons - Lili Maya and James Rouvelle</image:title>
<image:caption>Lili Maya is an artist with a diverse background in art and design. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with an MFA in Digital + Media and a BFA in Graphic Design. Before making art the focus of her professional practice, Lili worked as a graphic designer for several years. As an artist, she has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and considers drawing to be at the core of her process. Drawing informs her approach to all media and emerging technologies both formally and conceptually. In 2009 Lili began working with artist James Rouvelle in New York as part of the Maya + Rouvelle artist duo. Their collaboration integrates traditional and emerging media into art objects, installations and performances. James Rouvelle grew up in New York and began his creative life as a composer and performer. His early works were structured improvisations composed for different ensembles, ranging from traditional Western instrumentation to hybrid groupings that included electronics and nontraditional instruments. Eventually James’ interest in the connections between traditional and modern art and culture led him to study emerging technology. Now he develops projects and forms that explore and invigorate the presence of the traditional within the materials of the present. James now works with artist Lili Maya, as Maya + Rouvelle.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ian Burns’ artworks revolve around the development of processes that subjugate the seductions of technological media and clichés to supporting roles in the creation of forms and systems that privilege the unique experiences of physicality, investigation, and awareness to be found on that thin line between the poetic and the ridiculous. Burns’ work has been widely exhibited internationally. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in the USA, Australia, Spain, Ireland, and Austria. His work has been included in recent major museum exhibitions in the USA, Australia, South Korea, Belgium, and The United Arab Emirates. His work is included in major public and private collections in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Spain and Mexico. His encounters with glass began with some optical experiments and has continued through residency projects at Pilchuck Glass Art School and UrbanGlass.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pushing Buttons - Exhibiting Artists: Sarah Max Beck, Robert C. Beck, Ian Burns, Jim Campbell, Paul DeMarinis, Lili Maya, James Rouvelle, Sunita Prasad and John Roach</image:title>
<image:caption>The expanded use of glass as an artistic medium emerged in the late sixties, roughly coinciding with the rise to prominence of video, performance, bio art and other "New Media". Since their emergence, these new media have developed along similar trajectories to that of the studio glass movement. From nascent periods of direct and drippy material experimentation they developed adolescent obsessions with increasingly slick expressions of skill for skill's sake. In their current midlife iteration, both have landed in a realm where craft is assumed and deftly applied to concept. The artists included in Pushing Buttons represent a myriad of backgrounds and fields of inquiry, yet all share an inherently hybrid and inquisitive approach to making and thinking. Their intuitive and exploratory artistic practices have allowed them to effectively integrate the creative and conceptual possibilities of combining glass with New Media. Much can be learned about the expressive potentials of the material by tracking these artist’s innate responses when presented with a new and potent art making tool. Drawn to the acoustics, transparency, and optics of glass, the artists in the exhibition have cleverly engaged glass to contain, reveal, distort, and resonate systems of image, sound, and information.</image:caption>

This is a very special moment for these two characters. The history of their relationship includes online and phone chats, a little dancing, a little shape shifting. But this is the first time they stand face-to-face, gaze into each other's eyes, and express their oneness through a gesture of love. The piece also meditates on bisexuality by taking the term literally, mixing and matching gender combinations within a single kiss.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>A Thin Veneer - Nora Salzman</image:title>
<image:caption>Nora Salzman was born in Chicago, IL. The RISD library has a video that her late mother made called “Four More Years.” The “documentary covers the 1972 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach. Particular emphasis is placed on the younger people who attended it.” Call number: JK2353 .F68 1972 “Masking” represents the magical but temporary transformation between genders or identities. The transformations are “just enough” approximations in order to create a believable fiction. I lengthen the belief in the fiction by exploiting the embedded expectations of truth-value intrinsic to each medium. For example, a painting implies fantasy while the photo is fact. I take the assumptions of truth-value from one genre and lend them to another by cycling through painting, sculpture, and photography. As a narrative, the multiple iterations and combinations of props confuses what is real and who is the original.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>A Thin Veneer - Bryan Wilson</image:title>
<image:caption>Bryan Wilson is a glassmaker, filmmaker, and performer. He grew up in Missoula, MT and enjoys death metal. “The choices we make to display our bodies, how we perform our gender, race, and sexuality all contribute to our understanding of persona. Occasionally, we realize that we have accumulated so many symbols and markers of identity that we have forgotten who and what we are. Symptoms of this condition manifest as profound confusion and cognitive dissonance. The antidote presents itself as an affirmation of the body as a blank canvas, a ritual to acknowledge the accumulation of these symbols, and the choice to accept or break free from their constraints. The cure may include discomfort, humiliation, and trauma, but it can present one with a newfound love of the air, skin, and the freedom to choose.”</image:caption>

He is currently a 3rd year Undergraduate Glass Major at RISD. “ The face acts as a projector of identity and displays a person's state of being at any given time. <image:title>A Thin Veneer - Rebecca Carter</image:title>
<image:caption>Rebecca Carter spent her childhood frequently moving house with her family. By the age of eight, she had relocated to thirteen homes, in three countries, two states, and countless towns. Through these moves, she was forced to constantly purge the toys and objects of her life that were deemed unimportant causing her to develop close relationships with the objects that could be taken. “ These objects are not actually me, and in the end, are impermanent, unsatisfying, unfulfilling. They act as an anchor to my life, limiting my ability to feel free in the world. In this performance I am slowly carrying the pieces on my body, keeping them close to me, creating a costume out of them, letting them define me, but also exploring the physical and emotional weight of this kind of material attachment, and the struggle.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Man's Best Friend</image:title>
<image:caption>My work tackles the relationship that we humans have with our natural and synthetic environments. From a biological standpoint, we are truly odd creatures. We shape our surroundings and the species that we come in contact with at an alarming rate and in an unmatched scale. All too often, the unintended consequences of past actions return to affect our present and future livelihood. In coming to Japan I decided to concentrate on the relationship back and forth between plants and humans. I settled upon the case study of rice as an ideal example of a species in coevolution with humans. Just as we have changed greatly from our hunter-gatherer past, so too has rice mutated from a wild grass into the most important and abundant food staple on earth. All of the pieces in this show addressed on some level from the microscopic to the panoramic my ever-changing position in the dynamic and fluid systems that I inhabit. By extracting and examining a few details of this system, I hoped to gain a greater knowledge of the system as a whole and my role in perpetuating and preserving a delicate balance. With sincerest gratitude to the faculty, staff and students of Toyama Institute of Glass Art for their amazing hospitality and countless hours of help. Most of all, a very special thanks to Erika Tada, my tireless and dedicated assistant.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Fresh Masters - Evan Burnett, Ana Parisi, James Ronner, Kris Rumman, and Heather Sutherland; Jurors: Graciella Cassel and Graham Caldwell</image:title>
<image:caption>The disparate nature of the work in front of you only hints at the richness of transdisciplinary variety found in a new generation of “glass art” practitioners. In the hands of talented young artists across the globe, this material is being manipulated with unprecedented skill to previously unimagined purposes. While this diversity is in of itself a readily apparent theme, the jurors and I were able to extract and tease some common threads evident in the work. I believe that these striking commonalities amongst a backdrop of creative individualism speak volumes about the culture that these artists are both creating and commenting on. Once the cutting room floor was covered with talented artist’s aspirations, Cassel observed that we had distilled “a visual and sensory space that questions reality and power”. It is hardly surprising but heartily encouraging that in an ecosystem of competing and diametrically opposed realities that reeks of corruption and the rampant abuse of power artists would rise up to address such prescient issues. Caldwell notes that the artists adeptly employ glass in relationship to a wide array of other materials and media to examine “the construction of gender and gender identity, memory, post colonialism, existential isolation, and comedy”. No longer content to speak passively through objects, each of these artists powerfully interjects themselves into the work either directly before the audience’s eyes or through the remnants or documentation of their performative acts.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Fresh Masters - Jimmy Ronner, Keep off The Grass</image:title>
<image:caption>James Ronner views art as a vector of progressive social change. The conceptual foundation of his work is firmly rooted in the self-generative role we collectively play in our cultural and technological co-evolution. His transdisciplinary yet fiercely material practice stems from his diverse personal, professional and academic experiences. Ronner completed a BS in 2005 with a double major in sculpture and molecular biology and a cell and molecular biology MSc in 2006. Ronner has taught at TsingHua University, CAFA Beijing and Alfred University. His work can be seen in both private and public collections in the US, P.R. China and Taiwan. Ronner has received national and international grants from several institutions including the Bernstein Fund, the Joan Mitchell Foundation and the Georges Lurcy Charitable Educational Trust. In May of 2017, Ronner completed an MFA at Alfred University where he was investigating multisensory immersive strategies which confront endemic cultural disengagement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Fresh Masters - Kris Rumman, Local</image:title>
<image:caption>Kristine Rumman is an interdisciplinary artist whose work investigates the possibilities of what art can do that politics cannot. Comprised of sculpture, installation, performance, video, and object-making, Rumman works with technologies that are familiar forms for producing propaganda globally, ranging from security glass and empathy inducing lighting to self-help audio tapes, olfactory praxis and social platforms. Rumman grew up in Toledo, the birthplace of the Studio Glass Movement, where she began her nearly two-decade long relationship with glass. She graduated with a BFA from Bowling Green State University in 2008 and an MFA from Tyler School of Art in 2018. For her work, Rumman has received awards and grants including support from Temple Contemporary and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Laurie Wegmen Prize in Glass, and the GAS Student Exhibition: A Showcase of Emerging International Talent. Kristine Rumman is presently based in Philadelphia where she is an Instructor at Tyler School of Art and a new member at Vox Populi.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Evan Burnette, born in Springfield, Illinois, received his MFA from Ball State University in 2017. He currently resides in Portland, Oregon, where he is in the process of building a glass studio. His artwork combines many tenets of early 20th-century Surrealist thought, such as automatism and free expression, and integrates psychological, aesthetic, and ethical issues related to humor. His works show an interest in the concepts of both physical and mental play, part Dadaist, part social satire, and part toilet humor.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Fresh Masters - Ana Parisi, Raizes</image:title>
<image:caption>Anna Parisi is a Brazilian artist born in 1984 and based in Brooklyn whose practice is mostly centered in sculpture and performance. She earned a BA in communications from Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC-RJ) and her MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design. Through her research and work, Anna investigates the violent and traumatic experience of the erasure of black, female-coded and historically oppressed bodies. She is interested in provoking and creating a dialogue between distinct African Diasporas, working through ideas of decolonization of the mind. By expediting the process of corrosion on metal to reveal layers and layers of violence, oppression, and neglect, she gestures towards deconstructing racism and misogyny by pushing the material into its full erosion. Her interests lie in exploring ways of resistance to structural violence through the dismantling of racial hegemonies in her pieces. Anna has exhibited in Westbeth Gallery, Smack Mellon, Artigo Rio, Musée de l'Elysée Lausanne amongst others.</image:caption>

<image:title>The New Classics - Curated by Rachel Rader and Ben Wright</image:title>
<image:caption>To define the 4th dimension of the glass world one must find the variables vibrating the farthest from the cultural norms and well-traveled orbits of the masses, so far off the atomic grid that they redefine it. The artists in this exhibition engage space, time and pseudo science with the sardonic wit of home chemistry enthusiasts. They have transformed this art orphanage into a wonderfully confusing psychedelic wormhole for you. As you wander the show, avoiding ubiquitous micro space rubbish, ponder the meaning of alien heads and lava lamps floating in a pool of shiny muck, attach significance to Drury’s impeccably curated horde and giggle at the sight of an aquatic tooth brushing orgy. Riccuto’s over-sized Kaledicsopemobile meets Hanson’s lab of inequity in a symbiotic and symbolic mash up of self-reflective worldviews. But do not overlook the quieter voices here. As glass fades eloquently into concrete into light and back again it creates harmonic undertones that float beneath the raucous chorus. Like a three ring circus, this show radiates more energy then can be logically consumed and dewy decimeled in a single dose. Strip your preconceptions of material, scale, and intent. Open your third eye and dive into the fountain of weird. I think you will find that the water is just fine… There is no question that glass attracts a community of eclectic practitioners that move to the beat of an idiosyncratic drummer. It defies rigid logic and acts of its own state shifting volition: freezing movement, transferring light, reflecting and distorting created realities. Even in this odd company, these artists are transgressive, the weird of the weird, non-conformist ill-fitting prosthetics of the glass world. They are busy producing the new classics of tomorrow.</image:caption>

      <image:title>New Glass Review 38 - Juror Statement</image:title>
<image:caption>New Glass Review… New… Glass… Review… At first it seems an obvious and direct title for a document aspiring to present the cream atop today’s broth. But a more literal reading reveals the underlying contradiction. How do you present the best of the future while gazing backwards? As in our title, is Glass somehow stuck in the middle, bracketed by an instinctive fetish for discovery and a nostalgic respect of family traditions? Where does “good” lie when artists are coming to the medium with so many contradictory intentions? Put more positively, can the studio glass movement stride forward into a new, as yet unimagined, reality while still drawing strength from its roots in centuries of material investigation and accumulated wisdom? Judging by the view, afforded by this unique curatorial experience, my answer is: absolutely yes. I was inspired to find that the structural seeds planted by our glass ancestors have ripened into a field that encompasses an extreme depth and breadth of enquiry, full of work that confused, irritated and moved me. The concept of quality is increasingly a moving target, but from what I have seen, the perceived crisis of our field is nothing more then the growing pains of a generation as we slowly realize that we must now build evolved systems to support the promise of our future growth. There is no shortage of talent. Along with my fellow jurors, I tried to wade through the submissions in a fair and deliberate way. Many considerations came to bear on our far ranging discussions, not the least of which, is that this is a print publication which unfortunately favors certain work and documentation styles. I personally attempted to take as intuitive an approach as possible. I registered exceptional reaction in any direction as a positive and advocated for that work regardless of, or at times because of, its formal aesthetics. A month removed, I am reviewing my selections on the kitchen table and a few characteristics emerge that my subconscious clearly registered as intriguing outliers when sequestered in the sensory withdrawal of that dark room in December. In many of the entries, I was drawn to a directness of approach and material misuse that I strive for in my own practice. The brutal, pseudo organic, architecture of Simone Fetzer’s new work aggressively seizes possession of space while Eli Hansen’s day-glo cook house contraptions arrive at sinister via more seductive routes but each possess the vital immediacy of artists trying furiously to keep pace with their inner voices. Intelligent use of humor and clever innuendo are a short cut to this juror’s full attention. Wearing many masks, from Mike Hernandez’s dirty drip of a composition to Megan Stelljes suggestive banana bros, funny and suggestive work repeatedly showed the ability of laughs to circumnavigate audiences’ most stubborn filters. Out of an abundance of exceptional character driven art submitted, the fantastically hapless creatures inhabiting Tom Moore’s peculiar planet and the over the top obnoxiousness of Kim Thomas’s crunchy trio of twerps float to the top by invoking the wacky wonder of Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Tim Burton at his best. Defying the flat page, endearing characters also popped up in several entries that managed to overcome the documentation obstacles inherent in translating dynamic live and video performances into still photos. I was lucky to have previously viewed videos of the adventures of Stanislav Muller’s superheroic Mirror Man, but his submitted still somehow perfectly encapsulates this humble, hilarious and profound work and is stunning in its own right. Likewise, a very strong graphic from the collaborative group, “Flock the Optic” hints at the group’s avian obsessions and their creative interplay between craft, performance and emergent technologies without portraying the full multimedia massage of the senses that awaits their once and future audiences. It is encouraging to see an enormous amount of experimentation combining glass with “new” media approaches from video and sound works to microcontroller driven, responsive sculpture. I did my best to resist my moth-like attraction to blinky lights and hold this charismatic, but all too often conceptually void, work to the same standards of originality and true innovation. For me, the Art itself had to be more compelling then the machines, sensors, programs, leds or glass making the magic happen. The work that most successfully superseded its components was often the result of collaborations amongst exceptional artists and technicians from a range of backgrounds that bridge the digital craft divide. While in Residence at Pilchuck Glass School, David Stout and Corey Metcalf, known as Noisefold, worked with glass artists Jason Christian and Daryl Smith to make a series of illuminated forms visualizing aspects of mined atmospheric sound. These objects will, no doubt, permutate through their work in the physical, digital and now virtual worlds that they create. A similar venture teamed up sculptors Ami McNeel and Mark Zirpel with multi-media artist Sam Stubblefield for a long-term residency at MadArt in Seattle. The resulting sonic and visual playground fed data from poetic sources through monumental kinetic mechanisms, laser light shows and instruments of medieval wonder and space age delight. These fruitful partnerships show a pathway to unlock the true potential of these new tech tools in the hands of non-linear artists and flexible designers. Above all, my selections show a clear underlying affection for the absurd. It is in this realm that artists can most effectively plant conceptual seeds and nourish the growth of new thought. Whether it's the schoolboy charm of Erwin Wurm’s water bottle boy or the haunting humanity of the bald spot atop Dagmara Bielecka’s “Organica” these pieces challenge logic with their existence and win. Nate Riccutto’s pimped up psychedelic man-trike and spaced out survivalist installations lead the viewer down a wormhole of sci-fi aesthetic and narrative non sequitur. Their initial oddness is magnetic and upon engagement one finds oneself within a conceptually airy atmosphere that allows us to choose our own adventure through a glorious jumble of half implied storylines. So those are a few of my favorite things. I tried with my juror selections to highlight artists who echo these same attributes and share with you a few of the many next level thinkers and makers that I have had the honor of crossing paths with in this magical career. Although sporting widely varied backgrounds, and digging in different fields of inquiry, I feel they have all brought something new and good to glass. I will end by saying thank you to Susie and Corning for this once in a lifetime experience, to my fellow jurors for a delightful collaboration and to all the applicants in the book and out for taking the time to invest yourself deeply in making meaningful objects, events and atmospheres. The world needs your efforts, now more then ever…</image:caption>
